Until 1961, Cozumel was a sleepy, little fishing community, when Jacques Cousteau declared the reefs of Cozumel one the most beautiful scuba diving areas of the world. Since that time, and thanks to the efforts of activists and the high diving standards of the Caribbean, most of the reefs are now within a marine refuge park to protect the delicate balance of the dazzling coral reefs and abundant variety of tropical fish.

Cozumel's beaches vary from scalloped bays and inlets to wide wind-swept stretches of powdery sand. The calm waters of the western side of the island are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, windsurfing, and sunbathing. Fish feeding is a common activity at some beaches, and 100 meters off the La Ceiba pier is a sunken 40-passenger plane, which serves as a reef to all sorts of colorful marine life.

Beyond the island's waterside activities (diving, snorkeling, swimming, windsurfing), there's plenty to see and do away from the shore. Mayan ruins, scattered and crumbling, are testimony to Cozumel's role as a Mayan ceremonial and commercial center. San Gervasio, the island's best preserved, most visited site, features a group of small shrines and temples honoring Ix-Chel, the Mayan goddess of fertility. A visit to the museum is a journey through the course of time, and a visit to the botanical gardens or a nature preserve will leave you with a new respect for nature. You may rent motorcycles, bicycles or jeeps for transportation or take a convenient taxi to travel around the island.
